If you are looking for a weeknight recipe to shake things up, this recipe is honestly just FUN. The homemade BBQ sauce on this flatbread is seriously mouth-watering— a little tangy, with just the right amount of sweetness, and a lil bit of heat. The perfect balance of all the flavors you want in BBQ sauce (and zero preservatives, unlike store-bought BBQ sauce!) This Healthy BBQ Chicken Flatbread Pizza has quickly become a favorite in our household, and I’m hoping yours too!

All about that sauce—
While you could totally use store-bought BBQ sauce if you’re in a pinch, this recipe only take 15 minutes to whip up and it’s so much better, I PROMISE. Here’s what you need + what each ingredient adds to the overall flavor:
- Tomato sauce — the perfect base
- Tomato paste — adds a deep tomato flavor
- Apple cider vinegar — to give a little tang
- Brown sugar — for a touch of sweetness
- Molasses — warm, sweet, and a little smoky
- Worcestershire sauce — gives looots of depth + flavor
- Spices — garlic-y, onion-y, peppery, and a bit of heat

BBQ chicken flatbread crust
Our go-to crust lately is Aldi’s Stone Oven Baked Artisan Flatbread. The edges get perfectly crisp + the center never gets soggy.
But you could use any pre-made pizza crust or even naan!

The toppings
I kept this recipe pretty simple. Here’s what you need:
- Red onion — the perfect little crunch + bursting with flavor
- Cilantro — a tasty + refreshing herb that balances all the rich flavors going on
- Mozzarella + Cheddar Cheese — something about this combo with BBQ sauce is IDEAL
- Chicken — Packs this meal with protein, leaving you satisfied + nourished
—A step that can’t be skipped! After your chicken is finished cooking on the stove, you seriously need to toss it in a couple tablespoons of your homemade BBQ sauce. When your flatbread comes out of the oven, the chicken will have the yummiest glaze on top that is *to die for*. Trust me.

Healthy BBQ Chicken Flatbread Pizza
Serving Size: 4-6
Prep Time: 20-30 minutes
Cook Time: 10-15 minutes
INGREDIENTS:
- 2 chicken breasts, cut into small bite-size pieces
- 2 flatbreads — the flatbread I use is about 6″x12″ (you could also use naan, pita, pizza crust, or cauliflower crust)
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil (or oil of choice)
- 1.5 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1.5 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 small red onion, diced
- 1/4 cup fresh cilantro
BBQ Sauce:
- 3/4 cup tomato sauce
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 3 tablespoons molasses
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 4-5 cloves garlic, minced (or 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder)
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
- 1/4 teaspoon paprika
- a pinch of cayenne pepper
DIRECTIONS:
- Preheat oven to 450°F and line two pans with foil.
- Whisk together sauce ingredients in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Once sauce begins to bubble, turn down to low heat. Cook for 10-15 minutes uncovered, stirring occasionally until sauce is slightly thickened. If you prefer a thicker sauce, feel free to whisk in cornstarch one teaspoon at a time until sauce is desired consistency. Set aside.
- Meanwhile, heat oil in a pan over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the chicken and sprinkle lightly with salt and pepper. Cook until chicken is browned and just about cooked through (no more pink).
- Spread about half of the BBQ sauce mixture onto each flatbread, reserving 1-2 tablespoons.
- Remove chicken from pan and add to saucepan with remaining 1-2 tablespoons of BBQ sauce. Add a tablespoon of cilantro. Toss chicken to coat.
- Top each flatbread with cheese, red onion, cilantro and chicken. Bake for 10-15 minutes, until cheese is melted and crust is lightly browned and crispy. Enjoy!
